CHAPTER TWO

How to Turn Poison Into a Meal is the name of my Fall/Winter 2020 collection. This project is a way for me to celebrate and remember, as well as using my body as an archive, creating documentation of my ancestors and their practices of reveling in joy and resilience from a heavy existence.

What is being documented and shared through this process of my fellowship is a small collection of short films featuring movement choreography and garments I have made and specifically designed for performed rituals.

Each short film is an abstracted and elevated version of cyclical practices I grew up with ; something I like to think of as an archive of rituals that come from a long line of independent women. What we did and continue to do is rarely documented nor celebrated. What I know about my family history is informed mostly by stories passed down generation to generation on my mother’s side.

This is an invitation to peer into my process as I develop this work, rooted in my ancestral archive.
